Dental Crowns Procedure
Over time teeth can become damaged, cracked or even weakened through tooth decay. At Blue Water Dental we can entirely cover, or “cap” a damaged tooth while matching the color to the natural shade of your teeth. Besides enhancing the appearance of teeth crowns can also improve the shape and alignment of teeth.
We have many options in types of materials for crowns: Porcelain fused to gold, Zirconia, eMax ceramic, Gold or acrylic. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, crowns are permanently cemented with a resin cement and can only be removed by your dentist.
Why we might recommend a crown:
- Protect a structurally weak tooth
- Restore a damaged tooth
- Replace a large filling when there is not enough tooth remaining
- Hold a bridge in place
- To go over an implant abutment
- Change the colour of a severely discoloured tooth
- Cover a tooth that’s had a root canal
How long does a dental crown last?
With proper oral hygiene a crown can last decades. A crown may come loose or fall out if the underlying tooth has a cavity or is damaged, so it is very important to keep your gums and teeth healthy by brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day and flossing.
