BOTOX Cosmetic

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are on the rise worldwide. We also see an uptick in patients coming into our office for Botox in Langley, as people use this safe and popular treatment option for:

In fact, in Canada, over 18,000 people sought Botox of some kind each month. The results are fast, and many patients will notice an improvement in the first three days. Over the following week or two, the final result is achieved, and patients are often overwhelmed by how effective this treatment can be.

A 2016 study shows that most people experience the full effects of their treatment in 10 – 14 days.

What if you could turn back the clock or help your TMJ in less than two weeks?

It sounds too good to be true.

If you’re going into a procedure with a trained professional who specializes in Botox treatment, you’ll have the best results. Trained professionals know which muscles in the face to inject the Botox into to maximize the results.

In less than a week, 87%+ of patients that opt for non-surgical measures to deal with their winkles will notice a difference in their appearance. Additionally, the procedure is near-painless for a lot of patients.

Botox for Cosmetics: What is It?

Most people are familiar with Botox, but they may not know what it is or how it works. Botox is actually a neurotoxin derived from botulinum toxin.

To make Botox, first, the toxin is extracted. Next, it goes through an intensive purification process to make it fit for cosmetic use. Finally, the toxin is vacuum-dried and made ready for use.

Botox has been around since 1989, when it was first approved by the FDA for blepharospasm and eye muscle issues. Since then, Botox has become a standard in the anti-aging industry to treat a variety of issues, including wrinkles and fine lines.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox works by paralyzing the injected muscle temporarily. Because it is a neurotoxin, it targets the nervous system and disrupts nerve signals that create muscle contraction.

The product is injected directly into the muscle to:

The first step is to come in for a consultation at our office for Botox in Langley. During this time, your physician will discuss your goals and analyze your facial muscles to determine where the injection should go.

Next, Botox will be injected directly into the targeted muscle to paralyze it temporarily. For the first 48-96 hours, your muscle won’t be able to contract. The lack of muscle contraction will help smooth out wrinkles.

The effect will continue for the next one to two weeks as the neurotoxin continues to block the nerve signals that cause the muscle to contract.

While Botox can be very effective at reducing fine lines and wrinkles, the treatment is really only effective for signs of aging that are caused by muscle contractions. Some wrinkles are caused by gravity or sleep.

These types of wrinkles can’t be treated with Botox. When you come into our office for Botox injections, we will carefully choose which muscles to inject into to maximize its effectiveness.

One great thing about Botox treatment is that the recovery process is relatively quick.

If you’re concerned about pain from the injection, we can use a topical anesthetic or ice to numb the area prior to the injection.

Once the treatment is complete, you can go on with your day.

Does Botox Have Side Effects?

Most people experience few, if any, side effects after a Botox injection. The most common side effects are:

These mild symptoms typically subside within just a few days.

However, a small percentage of people may experience more uncomfortable side effects, such as:

In rare cases, patients may be allergic to the injection. In this case, they may experience rash, itching or asthma.

Patients who do experience side effects should call our office in Langley. We are here to help ease your side effects, but most of our patients have no issues after their Botox injections.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox is considered generally safe. Side effects present in less than 2% of patients. The health and safety of our patients is our top priority. That’s why we also make it a priority to educate our patients on the procedure and what to expect.

That said, a small percentage of patients do experience side effects. We ask you to call our office immediately if you experience side effects.

Potential Side Effects in the First 48 Hours

In the first two days (48 hours), patients may experience:

Potential Delayed Side Effects

While rare, allergic reactions can occur. If you are allergic to the Botox injection, symptoms will likely appear after the first 48 hours.

Fortunately, even when allergic reactions occur, the symptoms are mild itching or a rash.

Is Botox Common?

Yes. Over the last few decades, facial rejuvenation has become very popular and common. Botox is the go-to treatment.

Botox treatments are becoming increasingly common across the world, and that includes Canada. In Vancouver and British Columbia (BC) especially, more people are scheduling these treatments.

While anti-aging is the reason most people seek Botox treatments, it’s not a product that’s only used on adults. In fact, the leading user of Botox in BC is the B.C. Children’s Hospital. Children may receive up to 3,000 units of this product for a variety of reasons.

What Can Botox Treat?

We can use cosmetic Botox to treat a variety of anti-aging-related issues, including:

How Does the Botox Procedure Work?

Botox injections are common procedures. Rest assured that you are in good hands when you trust our experienced team with your treatment.

While we perform this procedure on a regular basis, we recommend that all of our patients educate themselves on how injections work. Knowing what to expect can ease anxiety and make the process smoother.

Here's how the procedure works:

Prior to the procedure, we will determine how much Botox to administer to maximize the effect and help create the desired outcome.

The entire treatment, from start to finish, typically takes less than 30 minutes. Many of our Langley patients come in for a treatment during their lunch break because the process is so quick.

Most patients are able to return to work after their treatment, so there’s minimal disruption to your normal routine. We ask that all of our patients stay relaxed during the treatment and have confidence in our experienced team.

Doing so will help you have the best possible experience and outcome.

Things to Avoid Post-Treatment

Patients can generally return to their daily routines after treatment, but there are a few things that you will want to avoid.

Those first few hours after the injection are the most important. To experience the best possible results, we recommend that you avoid:

We also recommend staying in an upright position for at least 3-4 hours after the treatment. If you follow our recommendations, you will love your results.

The first few four days after the treatment are when you will see the biggest improvements in your appearance. But it may take a full two weeks to see the full results.

If you experience any unusual side effects at any point, call our office right away.

Additional Botox Treatments

As mentioned previously, you’ll see the biggest improvements during the first few days after treatment and full results after two weeks.

We ask that our patients wait until those two weeks have passed to determine whether they will need follow-up sessions right away.

It’s important to remember that the results will last up to four months. They are not permanent, but they are long-lasting.

If you find that the Botox treatment produces the results you want, you can schedule follow-up treatments. In fact, many patients book follow-up treatments right after their injection. Of course, you can wait until your wrinkles start reappearing to book your appointment. It is completely up to you and your comfort level.

Pre-Appointment Considerations

We want our patients to have the best possible experience and results when they come in for their Botox session. Prior to your appointment, we ask you to do the following:

There are also a few things we should know before treatment because it may affect our ability to administer Botox, or we may have to change your treatment plan. Please tell us if you:

We ask that all patients be honest and transparent about any issues prior to their appointment so that we can provide the best possible experience. Knowing about these issues beforehand allows us to maximize the results.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

Generally, Botox injection prices will range from $10-$15 per unit. On average, we charge $12 per unit at our Botox clinic in Langley.

That said, there are a variety of factors that can affect the cost of your injection, including:

Patients can expect to spend between $300 and $2,000 per session.

The more severe the issue, the greater the cost in most cases. If you want to treat multiple parts of your face or you have deep-set wrinkles that need to be treated, the treatment cost will be higher than a patient with minor wrinkles.

We also work with very young patients in their early 20s who come in for “baby Botox.” These young patients do not have any fine lines or wrinkles, but they use Botox as a preventative measure.

Older patients with deeper wrinkles and more signs of aging will need more units of Botox and a more advanced treatment plan to produce the results they want.

When you come into our office for your appointment, we will map out your face and create a treatment plan to help you reach your goals.

Every patient is unique and will have a different treatment plan, but here is a sampling of our pricing:

At our Langley office, GST applies for cosmetic Botox treatments. However, therapeutic injections are exempt, such as those that target the:

Therapeutic treatments generally require more units. For the masseter, for example, we often recommend 50 units for a 90% or greater improvement.

Botox treatments may or may not be covered by private insurance. It ultimately depends on the type of treatment you choose. Treatments that require hundreds of units of Botox, for example, may not be covered by insurance.

Pricing Botox by Units – Our Process

Pricing a Botox treatment is challenging without seeing you in person. Some treatments only require 10 units, while others may need 40 or more. The price difference between these treatments can be significant.

To help with pricing issues, we use advanced software to:

Our software allows us to provide a more accurate estimate of your treatment costs.

Cheap Botox Doesn’t Always Equal Better Results

When done properly, Botox treatments can have a high price tag. Naturally, many patients are interested in saving money on their treatments. However, cheap Botox often leads to undesirable results.

Once we know your goals, we will recommend a certain number of units to achieve your desired results. If you opt for lower units than we recommend in order to save money on your treatment, you may wind up being unhappy with your results.

Another important thing to note is that the cost of treatment may have changed since the last time you came in for a treatment, especially if it has been a while since your last injection. As you age, we may also need to use more units to achieve the results you want.

Botox® vs. Dysport®

Dysport® and Botox® are two products that are commonly used for anti-aging, and many patients inquire about both when coming into our office.

Both of these products are derived from the same exotoxin A, which means that they typically produce similar results.

While the results are similar, the products are not.

One unit of Botox is equivalent to 2.5 units of Dysport®. Another important difference is that this treatment cannot be used on patients with lactose intolerance because it can produce serious side effects.

Our team can help determine which product will work best for you and to help you achieve the results you want.

What You Need to Know About Facial Aging

It's no secret that, over time, humans look older. If you look at a person who is 75 and one who is 22, it’s evident who is younger because of the facial aging process. This very process, which many people are trying to void, occurs because of key changes in your body.

For example, your skin when you’re younger is filled with:

And then, when you age, you lose some of these important skin elements. On top of this, there’s also a substructure change in the face occurring.

Understanding the facial aging process demands that you know about these structural facial changes, too. The changes that occur include:

Changes Occur to Your Skin

First, one difference that occurs that people experience and notice the most is that their skin stops looking youthful. The skin is filled with tissues and collagen, elastin and fibroblast. All of these compounds are then held together by hyaluronic acid.

In just 2mm of skin, all three of these elements work together freely.

Age begins to slow this free movement in the skin’s dermis layer. Additionally, the skin will begin to thin. Skin thinning, in turn, leads to two things people seek Botox for the most:

Collagen loss is the main reason for the skin thinning, and then you also begin to lose little fat deposits under your skin. Unfortunately, this is also the time when the skin’s elastin will begin to lessen and the hyaluronic acids, too.

The end result?

Sagging skin and wrinkles.

Fat Composition in the Face Changes

Fat may be a bad thing in some parts of the body, but not your face. Fat is what helps your face look young and vibrant. When you age, fat loss begins to occur slowly, and without the additional fat to plump the face, a few things happen:

Facial fat loss is what leads to you developing a hollow look in the eye area. Even your jowls will become heavier in appearance because the fat that was once in these areas is now gone. While fat loss occurs in some areas, it’s less prominent in others, which will make some people’s middle cheeks look bigger or puffier.

Bone Structure Begins to Change

On top of the skin and fat changes that occur, your facial bones also begin to regenerate a little slower. More accurately, the cells that help facial bones regenerate will decrease. The loss isn’t noticeable immediately, but it will lead to you developing hollowness around the eyes, bones around the eyes widening and your cheeks flattening.

This process doesn’t just happen in the latter stages of life. From the time that you hit 35, this bone loss will begin.

Facial bone loss will then lead to:

Wrinkles and even skin folds become more pronounced as a result of this bone loss. Over a period of a decade or so, the nasal bone begins to undergo reabsorption, your bone loss occurs, and the nose slowly rotates downward.

For most people, the “perfect” face is when they’re in their 20s.

Even babies have so many changes occurring and will need two decades before their face is perfectly filled. In fact, if you spend time looking at an elder’s face and a baby’s face, you’ll notice that the chubby cheeks look quite similar.

The reason for the resemblance is that babies don’t have the facial bone support for their facial tissue either.

Tissue Loss

The face has soft and hard tissue, and both of these tissues will undergo major changes. For centuries, scientists didn’t fully understand facial tissue. It wasn’t until around 40 years ago that researchers really became interested in skeletal growth.

At the time, a study occurred that analyzed facial skeletal growth from the time of birth through the beginning of adulthood.

This study provides us with most of what we know about skeletal growth today, including the face:

You don’t need to fully understand the scientific lingo of what happens to grasp the overall concept. Age in the study showed that nasal changes occurred, where the nose was wider and longer. Your cheeks will expand and experience greater depth while chin prominence also increases.

All of the information in the study also led to a greater understanding of soft tissue changes and how to treat them. Many of the anti-aging treatments of today focus on the soft tissue changes shown in the study, including:

Major facial changes will occur as everyone ages, but the study shed light on how treatments could be used to help regain the face’s balance. Adding fat with lipid fillings or using Botox are just two of the ways that people are restoring their facial harmony.

Botox is sought after because it will help the facial muscles that contract as you age to relax, and then, if necessary, fillers will be added into the mix to try and reshape the face. Some of the aging signs that Botox can help with include:

Treatments may help with multiple facial aging signs, such as vertical lip wrinkles, hanging and sagging skin and even the concaveness that occurs in the cheeks.

The right treatment may even help with hooded eyes.

What are Hooded Eyes?

Hooded eyes, also known as brow hooding, are yet another condition that you’ll need to worry about due to the lack of facial bone and excess skin. The condition is when the brow line begins to develop folds and sagging skin, which occur at the brow line.

The skin near the eyebrows may reach the point where it will begin to sag:

In some cases, just a crease is left behind. Hooded eyes are one of the issues of aging that may have a negative impact on your life, too. While rare, there have been some occasions when the brow hooding starts to impair vision. On top of this, extreme cases of hooded eyes will cause people to have self-esteem issues and even embarrassment.

Genetics can also cause a person to develop hooded eyes earlier in life.

If there’s a history of hooded eyes in your family, there’s a good chance that you’ll develop them, too. Skin elasticity loss and volume loss can further impact the skin around the eyes.

However, there are ways to help with hooded eyes.

Treating Hood Eyes

Hooded eyes, unless they start covering the eyes, will not require medical treatment. In fact, most signs of aging do not require medical treatment, but no one wants to look tired or have hooded eyes. Appearance matters a lot to people, so the first thing many do is apply makeup to try and mask the hooded eye look.

Makeup will help you create the appearance of the eyes being more open and larger.

Long-term treatments are also available, and while you cannot perform these treatments on your own, they’re non-surgical or wash off like makeup will when you take a shower. Hooded eye treatment options that provide the best results include:

Botox

Botox is one of the go-to treatments for hooded eyes in Langley because people experience long-lasting results that will occur within the first few days after treatment.

Injections will:

We perform Botox in Langley, using only the leading treatments and techniques. Unfortunately, some of our clients have gone to less-than-reputable professionals who inject Botox improperly, leading the eyebrow to droop more than it did before treatment.

Our team will analyze your face, mark out the ideal location for injections and proceed with the utmost precision.

Additional Treatments for Hooded Eyes

Botox is the most common treatment for hooded eyes, but it’s certainly not the only option. Depending on the extent of your hooding, you may be a good candidate for other forms of treatment, including:

There are also surgical treatments that may help with hooded eyes. However, most people will opt for non-surgical treatments because there are fewer risks involved.

Guide to Botox for Crow’s Feet

If you have wrinkles on the edges of your eyes, this is the dreaded crow’s feet. Look in the mirror and you’ll find that the wrinkles on the outer edges of your eyes have the shape of a crow’s foot. Wrinkling occurs due to the loss of elasticity in this area of the eye.

Additionally, if you’re out in the sun often or exposed to pollution, crow’s feet can become even more prominent.

Reducing crow’s feet is possible using the right technique.

Treating Crow’s Feet

Treating crow’s feet is possible, and the results are often exceptional. The way to treat crow’s feet is through one or a combination of the following:

Fine Lines vs. Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet and fine lines aren’t the same, but they’re often confused for each other. The main difference is that a muscle contraction is what causes crow’s feet. Fine lines are narrower and shallower.Treating the two is possible, but fine lines are easier to treat and can often use only a dermal filler to restore your look.

Preventing Crow’s Feet

If you want to avoid having to get Botox in Langley, our team recommends that you begin protecting your skin today to reduce your risk of crow’s feet. The care tips we recommend are:

If you follow these tips, we’re confident that you’ll lower your risk of crow’s feet and keep them at bay for as long as possible.

Guide to Treating Jowls

Aging will also cause aging signs in your jowls and jawline. Over time, these areas will look heavier, and the main reason is that the skin of the jowls will begin to sag. The sagging occurs under the skin, and everyone will experience this to some degree.

However, some people will have more prominent jowl sagging than others.

Again, the main contributor to this condition is the loss of:

Add gravity to the mix of collagen loss, and it’s easy to see why the skin around the jaws and neck begins to sag and lower in this area. Aging can cause jowls, but some things can also make them appear worse or cause them, including:

Even genetics can cause you to be at higher risk of jowls. The good news is that there are multiple ways to treat jowls if you want to treat them. Since jowls do not cause medical problems, treatment is up to you and may include:

Guide to Treating Neck Lines with Botox

Neck lines are another part of aging, and the muscle in the neck that runs up the sides and into the lower face is the culprit. This muscle, called the platysma muscle, actually begins to wear.

The wearing is accompanied by:

The weakened muscle will then create platysmal bands in the area to compensate for all of these losses. Lines are often first seen when you contract the neck muscles, but over time, they will be present without contraction.

Botox is a highly effective treatment for neck lines because it works to smooth the lines and restore your youthful neckline. Injections are placed directly into the platysmal muscle. The procedure is fast and simple.

Since Botox will weaken the muscle, it will not contract and cause the neck lines that you’re trying to hide. Most patients will begin to notice that their neck’s softer and tighter look returns in just a few days following treatment.

Unfortunately, while most people are good candidates for Botox in the neck, there are some cases where we don’t recommend treatment. Vertical and horizontal lines on the neck can, in most situations, lessen with injections.

The best way to tell if you’re a good candidate for this treatment is to schedule an appointment in our office.

Guide to Treating TMD With Botox

Millions of Canadians have temporomandibular disorders, better known as TMD disorders. Females between the ages of 18 and 35 suffer from TMD most often. Unfortunately, over 75% of people will not seek treatment for the condition.

Tension headaches are one of the most common and first symptoms that people experience. And the headaches can be very intense and painful. One of two muscles are responsible for these tension headaches:

Constant pressure and pain can last days in extreme cases. However, the pain and discomfort can last for just a few minutes in the best-case scenario. Causes of tension headaches can include:

Stress can also cause tension headaches. Treating TMD is possible using one or a combination of NSAIDs, lifestyle changes, ultrasound therapy, laser therapy, cognitive therapy and Botox.

Treating TMD with Botox is extremely effective and can last up to two years.

Over time, the treatment can lead to retraining your brain to stop clenching the teeth and grinding them.

How Can Botox Treat TMD?

Botox works by paralyzing the muscle temporarily and preventing it from contracting. For TMD, this effect can help the jaw relax. Because the jaw is relaxed, your muscles and ligaments have a chance to repair.

Botox also disrupts the body’s release of pain markers, such as glutamate.

Often, we pair Botox injections with nightguards and laser light therapy when treating TMD to maximize the effects.

We can use Botox injections to treat a wide range of issues, from signs of aging to TMD. Call us today to schedule an appointment for Botox in Langley.
